Diagnosis

  • Spinal tap

    • Collection of cerebrospinal fluid for analysis involving infection

  • CT scans

    • Produced cross-sectional images of the brain to reveal swelling

  • MRI’s

    • Produced detailed cross-sectional and 3D images of the brain

 

  • Lab Testing

    • Samples of blood or urine and swabs from the back of the throat help to identify viruses.

    • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

      • Test measuring and recording the electrical waves of the brain to watch for unusual pattern

  • Brain Biopsy

    • Procedure rarely done but requires a small sample of brain tissues only if symptoms are worse and treatments aren’t working properly.

  • Doctor would look for these signs during examination

    • Speech problems

    • Neck stiffness

    • Skin rash

    • Mouth sores

    • Muscle weakness
